Surgery for Hair Transplant

The American star and global celebrity Mae West was once quoted saying that a man might be short and bald, but if he had the necessary fire in him, women would still like him. Although this definitely applies— the real indicator of sincere interest should always be one’s true nature and character instead of outward appearances. However, in today’s modern age, baldness is often detrimental to man’s progress. Read on to find do’s and don’ts after the surgery for Hair Transplant.

Many people also assume that bald men are confident, which might hold true in some cases, but there are many individuals experiencing hair loss issues who do not desire to be bald and would rather have a head full of hair. Regrettably, hair loss comes with age and is thus a strong possibility for the majority of men (as some women) as they hit a certain age. The real kicker is that there are now many options to treat a receding hairline and accelerated baldness, one of which is hair transplant procedure.

Hair transplantation or surgical hair restoration is a treatment in which hair follicles from a specific part of the body, often referred to as the ‘donor site’ are transferred to bald patches called the ‘recipient site.’  Both Males and females are opting for hair transplants more than ever before: As per the 2015 data practise results released by the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery, hair restoration procedures conducted globally have increased by a mammoth 76% between 2006 and 2014, with men accounting for 85% of the recipient population.Taking note of this increase, it is vital that those interested in having a hair transplant must know what to do after the operation, mainly because adherence to the instructions is crucial for a successful hair transplant and, faster recovery and return to everyday activities.

Once you’ve arrived home after undergoing a transplant surgery, it’s imperative to ensure that you are absolutely confident about taking utmost care of the most valuable thing: your freshly grafted hair shafts. They’re still delicate, and need a little bit of support and nurturing to gain a strong foothold. Hair transplant specialists give specific instructions for home treatment to their hair transplant recipients before they leave the facility— Here are some of the DOs and DON’Ts that need to be adhered strictly, word to word:

DO’s After a Hair Transplant

  1. Immediately after the treatment, make sure you have someone to give you a ride back home. Hair transplant surgery does not typically involve heavy sedation, but if you have been given one, it is best not to drive under its influence.
  2. Rest with your head lifted for at least the first seven days post-op, or as long as you feel even a wee bit of swelling/inflammation. It only lasts for a few days for most of the recipients who have undergone FUE and FUT, and others might never feel it at all. A recliner is very convenient as a makeshift bed. Just think about all the Amazon prime video binge-watching you can do when you’re in there!
  3. Ask your physician or nurse what drug is safe to take. Do add ice just above the eyebrows to help avoid swelling, which generally happens on the 3rd or 4th day of post-op.
  4. Be very careful and patient while washing your hair for the first five days, beginning on Day 3. Don’t rinse too much; don’t blow the water straight onto your scalp.Apply the conditioner lightly to the scalp to minimize any itching.
  5. Dye your hair shortly before the treatment if you believe you can’t wait for another four weeks post-op. Dying your hair before surgery to transplant your hair would not have any detrimental effect.
  6. Make sure to drink plenty of water both before and after hair transplantation treatment.
  7. Do anticipate some hair to fall out of the grafted areas between 2 to 4 weeks after your treatment— This is totally normal, and part of the regular hair growth cycle, and in no ways implies that the follicles are harmed. You may expect your full mane to grow in approximately three month timeline.

DONT’s After a Hair Transplant

  1. Avoid rubbing your new hairline against your pillow. Also, don’t be alarmed if you have swelling, particularly on days 3 and 4 after Surgery for Hair Transplant— it’s absolutely normal.
  2. Don’t apply ice directly to the transplanted areas of your scalp. In fact, you just want to stop having anything to do with these places for at least a few days post-op.
  3. Don’t attempt to prevent the development of scabs on your scalp. The emergence of scabs is a pretty common outcome after the region has been poked and shoved and is part of the natural healing process. Just like you want to leave a scab on your elbow untouched until it’s completely recovered and gone, you need to let the scabs on your head form freely and heal until they fall off on their own. Avoid wearing hats or ball caps for the first three days at least. The scabs, which naturally develop after a hair transplant, require about three days to solidify. It’s best to prevent something from hitting your head throughout this period. Also, avoid putting water in your hair or washing them for the first 72 hours after undergoing the treatment.
  4. Avoid the temptation to scratch the scalp. Some itchiness is common for the first few days after a hair transplant, which usually subsides soon. Scratching can make things worse and disturb the grafts.
  5. Don’t expose your scalp to intense sunlight other than a short amount of time for the first two weeks. After three days, make sure you’re wearing a hat. It’s very typical of patients with hair transplantation to take a vacation time to recover, and it’s perfectly fine to relax on the beach or take a stroll outside, as long as you don’t run the risk of sun damage. However, you’re not allowed to go scuba diving.
  6. Avoid involving yourself in a vigorous exercise regime in the days following your hair transplantation.  You need to be extremely vigilant with your workout routine— the BP and heart rate must remain in a stable zone until the possibility of the swelling has subsided. We know, it can be difficult for fitness freaks. However, you may swap pumping the iron with a light run or some moderate cardio during the recovery period.
  7. Do not drink alcohol for about five days after the treatment; alcohol in your bloodstream can interfere with the blood supply to the brain. Also, don’t smoke for at least a  month after Surgery for Hair Transplant. Again, blood flow is vital to the growth of new hair. Quitting smoking will be the safest course of action if you haven’t already done so.
