preparations

With Super Bowl LVII just six weeks away, preparations for the big game are well underway in Phoenix, Arizona as State Farm Stadium will be hosting the Super Bowl for the third time after hosting the game previously for Super Bowl XLII and Super Bowl XLIX. The city also held Super Bowl XXX in 1996.

Following week 16 of the NFL’s regular season, the current favorites from each conference to make it to Super Bowl LVII according to BetMGM Arizona is the Buffalo Bills at +175 and the Philadelphia Eagles at +165. The Bills and Eagles of course at the top of the Super Bowl futures board as well at +350 and +450 respectively, the AFC’s Kansas City Chiefs are tied with the Eagles at +450.

Rihanna is set to take the stage at halftime…

preparations

The biggest preparation for Super Bowl LVII is the fact that pop star Rihanna will be making her first onstage appearance in five years when she takes the stage at halftime. The Barbadian singer was announced as the halftime show by the NFL in September, the nine-time Grammy Award winner will look to follow up the legendary halftime show from Super Bowl LVI that featured Dr. Dre, Snoop Dog, Ice Cub, 50 Cent, Kendrick Lamar, and Mary J. Blige.

Other events taking place in Phoenix

preparations

The halftime show of course is not the only event taking place as the city of Phoenix will host various events in the weeks heading into the Super Bowl. One of the biggest events will be the Super Bowl Experience presented by Lowe’s. That event, which is free to all will be a Super Bowl watch party held at Hance Park in Phoenix. There will also be the Super Bowl experience in the days ahead of the Super Bowl which allows adults and kids alike to meet former NFL players, take part in interactive games, displays, and more.

Other events leading into the game will include Super Bowl Opening Night presented by Fast Twitch on February 6, the Bud Light Super Bowl Music Fest, and the NFL Honors.

Super Bowl will generate large revenue for the entire city of Phoenix…

While it’s debatable how much revenue the Super Bowl will bring to any one city, the one thing for sure is that many local businesses in host cities will benefit from hosting the big game. According to Business Insider, the NFL claims that the Super Bowl could bring upwards of $300 to $500 million to any host city.  However, in that same article, economist Victor Matheson estimated that the actual revenue generated for any given city could vary between $30 and $130 million.

Either way, the Super Bowl is guaranteed to bring in money to many local businesses throughout the city of Phoenix and surrounding areas including but not limited to hotels and restaurants.

For a greater understanding of what could be in store for Phoenix, one could look back to Super Bowl XLIX in 2015 which generated over $719m overall and nearly $300m in direct spending according to the Phoenix Business Journal. In 2008, Phoenix generated $501 million overall in revenue. With the current inflation of the economy, that $719m generated in 2015 could be surpassed this February for Super Bowl LVII. With the United State’s economy inflated by 25.6% since 2015, that 719 million generated for Super Bowl XLIX would be equal to $903m in 2022.

Super Bowl betting as popular as ever

preparations

The Super Bowl of course is also the biggest event every year when it comes to gambling. While getting a total number for sportsbooks across the country and world is nearly impossible, a look at how much Vegas Sportsbook receives in Super Bowl-related bets gives a strong indication of what one could expect nationally. According to BetFirm.com, $179,823,715 was wagered in Las Vegas sportsbooks last year for Super Bowl 56, the largest amount ever wagered. It was also a large increase from 2021 when just $136,096,460 was wagered. Since 2014, Las Vegas sportsbooks have generated over $100 million in wagers each year.

Additionally, Las Vegas Sportsbooks have generated at least $10 million of revenue in seven of the last nine years with Super Bowl XLIX and Super Bowl LII being the only Super Bowls since 2014 that failed to do so. In 2018, sportsbooks in Vegas only profited $1,170,432 on over $158m wagered as the Nick Foles-led Philadelphia Eagles defeated Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. In 2015 for Super Bowl XLIX, sportsbooks generated less than $1m total in revenue as Aaron Rodgers won his only Super Bowl so far with the Packers defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Super Bowl favorite has won the big game each of the last four years and has covered in three of four as well. Last year, the Los Angeles Rams failed to cover the 4.5-point spread at kickoff but still found themselves lifting the Vince Lombardi Trophy with a 23-20 win over the Cincinnati Bengals. The last underdog to win the Super Bowl was the Philadelphia Eagles in 2018 for Super Bowl 52, upsetting the New England Patriots as 4.5 point underdogs.
